Downloading and Installing

HiFi Control can be installed from the download page or the Microsoft Store. Use either method; you do not need both.

Install from the Website

Open the HiFi Control download page.
Select Download Free for Windows.
When the download finishes, open the file. Its name starts with HiFiControl-Setup- and ends in .exe.
Follow the installation steps shown by Windows.

The download page provides the latest stable release and lists release notes for stable and pre-release versions.

Find the Downloaded Installer

Unless you changed your browser’s download location, the installer is normally saved in your Windows Downloads folder:

C:\Users\<your name>\Downloads

Open File Explorer and select Downloads in the left sidebar, or use your browser’s download list:

Browser	Find the downloaded file
Microsoft Edge	Press Ctrl+J, or open Settings and more (⋯) → Downloads. Select the folder icon beside the installer to show it in File Explorer.
Google Chrome	Press Ctrl+J, or open More (⋮) → Downloads. Point to the installer and select Show in folder.
Mozilla Firefox	Select the downloads arrow in the toolbar, or open the application menu (☰) → Downloads. Select the folder icon beside the installer.

If the browser asked where to save the file, check the folder you selected instead. A file ending in .crdownload or .part has not finished downloading yet.

Install from the Microsoft Store

The Microsoft Store is a good alternative if your browser blocks the installer or you prefer Store-managed updates.

Open HiFi Control in the Microsoft Store.
Select View in Store if the website asks to open the Microsoft Store app.
Select Get or Install, then sign in if Windows asks.
Open HiFi Control from the Store page or the Windows Start menu when installation finishes.

Store-installed apps are signed by Microsoft, update automatically, and do not show a SmartScreen download warning.

Continue Past the Windows SmartScreen Check

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks the reputation of files downloaded from the internet. A newly released installer may show Windows protected your PC while reputation for that version is still building. This warning does not by itself mean the installer is unsafe.

Only continue when you downloaded the installer from hificontrol.com or downloads.hificontrol.com.

In the Windows protected your PC dialog, select More info.
Check that the app name is the HiFi Control installer and review the publisher information shown by Windows.
Select Run anyway.
Continue through the installer.

Do not disable SmartScreen globally. If Run anyway is unavailable, your PC may be managed by an organisation or Windows Smart App Control may be blocking the installer. Install through the Microsoft Store instead, or ask your organisation’s IT administrator.

If the Download or Installation Fails

Retry the download from the download page, then wait for it to finish before opening the file.
Check the browser’s download list for a blocked or interrupted download.
Make sure the PC runs Windows 10 version 1903 or later, or Windows 11, and has at least 300 MB of available disk space.
Close HiFi Control before installing an update, then run the installer again.
On a work or school PC, ask the administrator whether installing desktop apps is allowed.
Use the Microsoft Store version if the website installer remains blocked.
